Dancer and choreographer Marc Vanrunxt (1960) studied from 1976 until 1981 at the dance school of An Slootmaekers and danced in her company. In 1980 he started making his own work. He also danced in performances of other choreographers like Thierry Smits, Catherine Massin, Truus Bronkhorst and Jan Fabre. In the eighties and nineties Vanrunxt collaborated with composers Serge Verstockt and Thierry Genicot, with visual artists Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Robert Cash and Danny Devos and with the dancer and costume designer Eric Raeves.
In 2001 he founded Kunst/Werk, a structurally funded organisation for dance that produces and distributes the work of Marc Vanrunxt and choreographer Salva Sanchis.
In the last decennium Vanrunxt created among other Most Recent (2002), Raum (2006), showtitle #63 Black Mark (2008) and Zeit (2011). Gradually he concentrated more and more on extraordinary solos for extraordinary dancers such as Kitty Kortes Lynch, Suzanne Grooten, Etienne Guilloteau, Lu Marivoet, Eva Kamala Rodenburg, Rob Fordeyn, Igor Shyshko, Lise Vachon, Georgia Vardarou and Marie De Corte. In 2010 Vanrunxt created the split screen choreography, For Edward Krasinski, in close collaboration with choreographer Salva Sanchis. The music Triadic Memories by Morton Feldman, was performed live by pianist Yutaka Oya from ChampdAction, a music ensemble with which Vanrunxt often collaborates. Since 2001 visual artist Koenraad Dedobbeleer creates the scenography of most performances. The year 2013 was all about innovation because of meetings and collaborations with visual artist Katleen Vinck (Dune Street Project), dancer Sabina Holzer (Ghost Dances), actress Sara De Bosschere (Lustforlife) and choreographer Arco Renz. Together with Arco, Vanrunxt wrote a solo for the classically trained dancer Rob Fordeyn: Discografie. She Was A Visitor is a solo that Vanrunxt co-choreographed with Jan Martens, at the invitation of the dutch choreographer Truus Bronkhorst. In the summer of 2014 Marc worked together with Igor Shyschko and again Katleen Vinck on a location project for Dansand in Oostende. Igor danced in the Northsea surrounded by an installation by Katleen.
Early 2015 Marc Vanrunxt created Real, So Real with Marie De Corte and mezzo-soprano Els Mondelaers, again on the music of Morton Feldman. Later that year Vanrunxt was invited by 0090 & Europalia Turkey to work with four Istanbul based dancers. Atmosphere premiered in Kaaitheater last October.
Marc Vanrunxt is guest teacher at the Royal Conservatory Antwerp. He is regularly asked as coach or mentor by P.A.R.T.S. and other choreographers and theatre makers like Roy Peters, Bryssinck & Peeters, Ann Van den Broek, Geert Vaes, Jan Martens, Charlotte Vanden Eynde, Caroline d’Haese and Chantal Yzermans.
